The word Mexico comes from the Nahuatl language, which was spoken by the Mexicas, or also known as Aztecs. Mexico’s name means “in the center of the lake of the moon” and refers to the fact that the Aztecs built Tenochtitlán in the middle of the Lake of the Moon. (later called Lake Texcoco)
